Japan Visa Guide for Pakistani Applicants

Pakistani citizens need a Temporary Visitor visa before travelling to Japan for tourism, visiting family, or short business activities such as conferences and negotiations. Applications are submitted in person and processed through the Embassy of Japan’s authorised visa centres — there is no e-visa option available to applicants residing in Pakistan.

One helpful point for Pakistani applicants: under a bilateral arrangement, Pakistani passport holders are exempt from the Japanese government’s visa fee, though a separate service charge still applies at the application centre.

• Temporary Visitor (Tourism) — sightseeing, recreation, or visiting friends; stays of up to 90 days depending on what is granted on entry
• Temporary Visitor (Family/Relatives) — for visiting relatives in Japan, generally requiring an invitation letter
• Temporary Visitor (Business) — short business visits such as conferences, negotiations, or exploratory meetings, allowing multiple short visits during the visa’s validity
• Long-Term / Work Visas — categories such as work, study, or long-term stay require a Certificate of Eligibility issued by Japan’s Immigration Bureau, and are handled separately from this visit visa guide

• Passport valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay, with at least one blank page, plus a photocopy of the bio-data page
• Completed visa application form, signed
• Recent passport-size photograph on a white background (45mm x 45mm)
• Detailed day-by-day travel itinerary, since Japanese consulates place real weight on a clear, specific plan
• Confirmed accommodation and flight reservations matching your itinerary
• Bank statements for the last six months showing a consistent balance and regular income
• Proof of employment or business (salary slips, NTN certificate, business registration documents)
• Invitation letter, if visiting friends or family in Japan
• CNIC and family registration documents

The Embassy assesses Temporary Visitor applicants mainly on whether they:

• Have a genuine, clearly explained purpose for a short-term visit
• Can demonstrate sufficient, consistent financial resources to cover the trip
• Have strong ties to Pakistan — employment, business, or family — supporting their intent to return
• Do not intend to undertake paid work in Japan on this visa

A well-prepared, detailed itinerary combined with honest, consistent financial documentation is central to a successful application.

Visa policy for Japan is set by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Japan in Pakistan. Application locations depend on your province of residence: residents of Punjab, KPK, AJK, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Islamabad Capital Territory apply through VFS Global in Islamabad, while residents of Sindh and Baluchistan apply directly at the Consulate General of Japan in Karachi. The Embassy does not issue same-day visas, and processing depends on document completeness and current workload. We recommend applying at least three to four weeks before your intended travel date, and not purchasing non-refundable tickets before your visa is approved.

Applications are submitted in person through VFS Global in Islamabad (for most provinces) or directly at the Consulate General of Japan in Karachi (for residents of Sindh and Baluchistan). You cannot submit an application if your intended travel date is more than 90 days after your submission date.

Do Pakistani citizens pay a Japan visa fee?
The Japanese government’s visa fee is waived for Pakistani passport holders under a bilateral arrangement. However, a separate, non-refundable service charge (commonly cited around PKR 3,500) applies at the visa application centre.

Can I apply for a Japan e-visa from Pakistan?
No. As of 2026, the e-visa system is not available to applicants residing in Pakistan — applications must be submitted physically.

What happens if my visa is refused?
Japan does not provide detailed refusal reasons. Applicants can generally reapply after strengthening their documentation, though the Embassy typically advises waiting before resubmitting.

• The VFS Global service charge is non-refundable, even if your visa is refused.
• Tourist visa extensions are generally not permitted — you must leave Japan before your authorised stay expires.
• Do not purchase non-refundable flights or make full hotel payments before your visa is issued.
